Please describe your experience with NY-BEST:
Over the last year I have worked with NYBEST to help build the organization and hire the Executuve Director. I have chaired the Governance Committee and have tried to offer practical, unbiased, honest advice on the structure and formation of NY-BEST. I am committed to the mission of NY-BEST and believe that the process of bringing together New York’s diverse assets will empower us to compete with the rest of the country and the world as we strive to solve the problem of energy storage.
Please describe your experience with the Battery & Energy Storage Industry:
I was a lead consultant for Syracuse University and 9 other research institutions in their effort to attract $130mm in DOE funding for the Energy Efficiency Regional Innovation Cluster to New York - energy storage was included in that proposal. I founded the CleanTech practice at Whiteman, Osterman & Hanna and sited over 800MW of wind energy and represented developers and innovators in the solar, energy storage, geothermal, energy efficiency, smart grid and lighting industries. As former VP of Corp. Dev. for MTI Microfuel Cells, I am very familiar with the energy storage industry and markets, because MTI viewed energy storage companies as its primary competitors. I have also entered into strategic transactions with energy storage companies including Duracell and Beacon Power.
Please describe why you would be a good candidate for the board:
First, I bring a unique expertise to the board. I have experience with not-for-profit companies, Sarbanes Oxley, corporate ethics and conflicts of interest, IP strategies, finance and investing, and growing start-up companies. I was lead attorney on the transaction that created Plug Power and was a founder of MTI Microfuel Cells. I have been inside and outside counsel to a number of energy companies and have a depth of contacts with VCs, private equity companies, mezzanine finance and project finance companies. Second, I bring a great enthusiasm and commitment to the mission of NY-BEST. Finally, I have an extensive network of contacts in the energy and finanace industry inside and outside New York.
